Day 23: Things I've learned that school didn't teach me
This was tough for me for some reason. I try to think of things that I tell my students about "life" in general. Let's see...
Your value isn't based upon what's on social media. The age of kids getting a Facebook, Twitter, etc. just seems to keep getting younger and younger. It's so easy to become consumed with what's on these things but that's not what we should live our lives by.
There is never enough time. The phrase "time flies" applies to this. Pretty self-explanatory... blink an eye and who knows what you'll miss.
Base your life decisions upon prayer. When faced with a decision, don't take it into your hands. Just simply pray.
Day 24: Top 3 worst traits
First, and foremost, my OCD tendencies. It is so hard for me to not be consumed by my to-do lists and just learn to "let things go" sometimes. I do have to give myself credit for becoming slightly better at this... but it's still certainly out of control. I know I drive Nate absolutely bonkers sometimes.
Social media addiction. I hate admitting to this one but it's true. I have learned to give myself a limit to the amount of times I visit the sites each day. I also do my best to completely abandon it when Nate gets home from work. It is so easy to miss out on life when you're obsessed with Facebook.
Taking forever to get ready. I am not, and have never been, one of those people who can get ready quickly. Mainly due to the fact that I take long showers. I often get frustrated at the amount of time it takes and am beginning to learn shortcuts. I've come to the realization that sleep is precious ;)
Day 25: Something I've been told about myself that I've never forgotten
In my opinion, a good work ethic is one of the best characteristics that a person can have. I've been blessed to be surrounded by people who really do believe in the concept of hard work. I pride myself on it, as well. A former colleague wrote a reference letter for me not long ago and complimented on that by saying that I was one of the few college students he'd come in contact with that went above and beyond the tasks at hand. He also contributed that trait to my success.
Hearing things like that only makes me want to work harder.
Day 26: Something interesting I've read online
"Date a Girl who Teaches"
A sweet article about the quirky traits that we teachers often share. It is oh-so true... especially for this girl.

may blog challenge {part 4}
Day 20: Something I'm Struggling with Right Now
I touched on this topic on Day 16. When I find myself worrying about something these days, it is almost always my current state of employment in the Fall. Or should I say the lack thereof. I think it is every college graduate's fear that they will not find a job after working their tail off for the past 4 years. It's also a fear that I'll rush into a teaching position that isn't "right" for me. I know that the Lord has a plan for me. I consistently remind myself of that when I feel the anxiety sinking in. Teaching is my dream and I only want to fulfill that.
Day 21: Links to My Favorite Posts
One of my favorite parts of blogging is the fact that I can look back and read my posts. It's a virtual scrapbook to me. Of the 337 posts I've done, here are some of my favorites...
observations on... comparison.
why I love to cook dinner.
one sentence.
the prayer of St. Francis.
Bliss.
teenage courage.
our story.
It's obvious to me as I was looking back at my posts, that my writing has become more mature in recent posts. I contribute most of that to the fact that I'm inching closer to the real world. I do cherish my older posts that mostly just dealt with recent happenings... there are many things that I had forgotten. Thank goodness for blogging!
Day 22: Gettin' on My Soapbox
Surprisingly, it was not hard for me to find a topic to get on my soapbox about... GRAMMAR.
As a teacher, grammar is something that I constantly preach to my students about. Grammar is a basic skill that we must know in order to be successful citizens. It drives me crazy to see students who are about to enter middle school still not using correct capitalization.
However, my most favorite improper usage of grammar occurs when someone enters a full-on rant on Facebook... with countless grammar errors.
And, just for the heck of it, here's another grammar ecard. I love me some ecards.
That seems like an appropriate note to end on ;)

my happy place
A happy place.
We all have one. A place we go to in order to feel a sense of true peace. Happiness. Life.
For me, it is basking in the summer sun.
I did just that yesterday afternoon for over 2 hours. It was heaven.
Just me, tanning oil, reading material, and my beloved Jason Aldean Pandora station. Oh, and the dogs were trying to join me as well. Typical.
For as long as I can remember, basking in the sun has been the place I go to for solitude. Obviously, it can only happen with the right weather so I take advantage of it during these warm months.
There's absolutely nothing better for my soul that to just lay and be with myself. Sometimes I will read. But most of the time, you will just find me alone with my music and my thoughts.
The relationship that we have with ourself affects the relationships that we have with those around us. When we're in our happy place, we learn to love ourself. Accept ourself. Realize that we are wonderful in the eyes of God.
The summer sun has been my happy place for as long as I can remember. It takes me back to my early high school years... before the responsibility. It gives me a sense of freedom and reminds me how important it is to just spend time with myself every once in a while.
Some things don't change after all these years. I still have my love affair with soaking up some Vitamin D. I still have my love for myself... and my happy place takes me back to that.
However, some things do change over the years.
I didn't drink these bad boys all those years ago in high school to cool down. ;)
What's your happy place?

may blog challenge {part 3}
Day 14: Ten things that make me really happy
{one}clean sheets, {two}fresh flowers, {three}driving with the windows down, {four}country music, {five}Sonic milkshakes, {six}my planner, {seven}a clean house, {eight}watching re-runs on the DVR, {nine}DIY projects, {ten}my friends and family (duh!)
Day 15: A Day in the Life
I gotta be real with y'all. I totally failed on this one. Currently, I have a few weeks off before I start working again and it has been crazy around here. I'm catching up on my to-do lists and actually trying to get ahead on some things. Let's make a deal, mmkay? I promise to have "A Day in the Life" post for y'all sometime this week. I do love looking back on these so I want to have one for my own memory :)
Day 16: Something difficult about my "lot in life" and how I'm overcoming it
This one was tough for me. I haven't had any real tragedies in my life and I know I'm beyond blessed because of that. The thing I am working the most on in my life right now is just learning to be content in the moment. I have probably written about this before on here but I'm sure it bears repeating. Our society often puts us in a state of mind where we're constantly going 100 mph. It's exhausting and we miss so much because of it. I am in a very happy place in my life right now. I'm a newlywed, just graduated college, and am hitting the job market. I could easily be overcome with anxiety about finding a job but I constantly just pray for the Lord to give me peace about this subject. I know He will put me where I need to go! Contentment is something I will continue to strive for. It will only bring more happiness to me :)
Day 17: A favorite photo of myself and why
This is from our wedding day. Obviously, it is one of my "better looking" days. Make-up and hair are just as they need to be. But the reason I love this is because I can remember the exact moment my photographer took this picture. Nate and I had just finished our first look and we were beginning to take pictures with our wedding party and family. My photographer was trying to gather them for a picture but they wanted to play with their guns for a bit longer. Boys will be boys. So instead she took even more pictures of me. I was cracking up at the boys when she snapped this. I remember the pure happiness I felt at that moment. I was surrounded by such loving and supportive people and was about to marry my best friend. It was a beautiful day and I couldn't find a reason not to smile.
Day 18: A Story from my Childhood
I have so many wonderful memories from my childhood. My sister and I are very close in age so they all pretty much involve her one way or another. That's the great thing about siblings... a forever playmate. Anywho, I cannot pick just one memory from my childhood so I'll highlight a few of my favorites.
(1) Each summer, we would spend many days with my great-grandparents. Specifically during VBS week. My sister and I (and sometimes our cousin) would pack our bags and go there to be spoiled rotten. We would play countless card games, have milkshakes as we pleased, run outside in the yard, play pool in the basement, and just be kids. Now that my Papaw has passed, I cherish those memories even more.
(2) I also remember many fishing trips with my Dad and sister. We had access to ponds in our area that were stocked with catfish and bluegill. We would spend hours staring at a bluegill bobber. My sister often became impatient and played in the dirt but I lived for those mornings when we learned many life lessons from our Dad... including how to bait a hook and set a fish loose. Nate still compliments me on those skills ;)
(3) Finally, shopping trips with my Mom and Nana. I remember I would get so annoyed going to yard sales and consignments stores when I was younger and now I absolutely live for it! I felt like such a grown-up when I went shopping with them and I enjoy those shopping trips even more these days :)
Day 19: Five of my favorite blogs
Stephanie @ Beautiful Mess.
A fellow southern girl who married a country boy. From her tales of raising a puppy to building a house, I can relate to many of her posts!
Natasha @ Hello! Happiness
A lady from my neighboring state who has had a whirlwind life the past couple of years. I love her positive outlook on nearly everything she writes about.
Erin @ Living in Yellow.
Everybody knows this girl so do I really need to explain why I love her?!?
Jennifer @ Life in the Green House.
She's a fellow teacher and lover of organizing. She is passionate about all things in her life.
Shalyn @ So Shay.
An honest Texas girl with a Texas-sized heart that loves every bit of her life.

may blog challenge {part 2}
Day 6: If I couldn't answer with my job, how would I answer the question, 'what do you do'?
I saw this video floating around several weeks ago and I swear it sums up "what I do" perfectly.
All my fellow teachers out there, can I get an amen?
Day 7: The thing(s) I'm most afraid of.
Failure. This has always been a fear of mine. I am a big goal-setter. I preach it to my students so I practice it myself. My fear of failing to reach a goal is always within me.
Snakes. My fear of snakes runs deep... to the point where I swear I've seen scripture that proves snakes are the devil. I know, maybe I'm slightly crazy.
Darkness. Especially when I'm having to walk alone at night. Night classes on campus were my worst nightmare. I hate the feeling of not being able to see what's right in front of me.
Day 8: A piece of advice I have for others.
I love this quote so much. We, as a society, often become so obsessed with material possessions. I have been guilty of that as well. My piece of advice is to focus on the real blessings that God has given us -- love, mercy, grace, forgiveness. That is what makes us rich.
Day 9: A moment in my day.
This was quite an eventful day for me. After putting in my 8 hours of student teaching, I headed straight to the school where I'll be working part-time this summer. (Hallelujah for a paycheck!) I had orientation there then had to run several errands before heading home. To sum it all up, I had been gone from home for over 12 hours and the best moment of the day was when I finally pulled in the driveway.
Day 10: Most embarassing moment.
To be quite honest, I have embarassing moments every day. I mispronounce a word and I have twenty-one 5th graders who are quick to point it out. Just a perk of the job, I guess.
But, let's be real.... my most embarassing moment was in 4th grade.
I won the school-wide spelling bee and moved to the district level. I was knocked out pretty early due to the word, joyous. It was torture to have to walk back to my family in front of all kinds of fancy people that I had never met before. You can bet that I have never misspelled that word again.
Day 11: Selling myself {10 words or less}.
A hard-worker who puts my heart into what I do.
Day 12: What I Miss.
The cartoons and movies from the 90s.
Day 13: My Public Apology.
I apologize for my over-use of sarcasm, eye-rolling, constant OCD cleaning, ridiculous social media habits, Diet Mountain Dew addiction, and obsession with Miranda Lambert. Old habits die hard, y'all.
...hoping all your Momma's out there had a fabulous day yesterday... especially mine :)

bittersweet.
Roughly 4 years ago, a girl walked down the aisle in a blue cap and gown. She graduated valedictorian from high school.
There were lots of pictures with old friends.
And a lot of thoughts about what the future would bring.
Five days later, she started her job at WKU and began the greatest journey she's ever known.
She learned how to get the best parking spots, glue little pieces of paper to make a mosaic,
put graphs together to analyze test scores, and learned how to teach the future.
She made lots of amazing new friends from all parts of the country.
She received many sweet gifts from students...
and teachers.
Tomorrow, she will look back on how much has changed in the past 4 years. A new name, a new address, new life goals, and a new perspectice on who she really is.
Tomorrow, she will walk down the aisle beside people she didn't even know 4 years ago, in a black cap and gown, accepting the honor of Summa Cum Laude.
Tomorrow, this girl will be surrounded by amazing people, say good-bye to the best years of her life thus far and, yet again, look forward to what the future holds. And it's bittersweet to say the least.

late to the bandwagon
Unless you've been living under a rock, you've heard about the Blog Everyday Challenge in May. Great idea, right?! I know I'm late to this whole thing, but I'm going to get started today! I will probably just post a couple of times a week with several days joined together. Let's get started...
Day 1 - The story of my life
I have lived and grown-up in the same small-town community throughout my whole life. It's home to me. My parents just celebrated 25 years of marriage and remain one of my greatest examples of real marriage. My little sister and I are only 28 months apart. I cannot remember a part of my life without her in it and, even though she is my polar opposite, I love her to pieces. I had my first boyfriend the summer before my freshmen year of high school. After that and another short relationship, I started dating the guy who is now my husband at only 14 years old. What can I say? When ya know, ya know. I have always had a love for learning and children. I know this is part of what impacted my decision to become a teacher. It is my calling. I persued that dream by attending WKU. After graduating high school as a valedictorian and working my tail off on the ACT, I obtained a scholarship that paid for my tuition entirely. I am one of the few who will graduate college with zero student loans and that's something I'm proud of. Through my experiences at WKU, I made some amazing new friends, kept around my true old friends, and married my high school sweetheart. College has been the best experience thus far of my life. I found out exactly who I was and I haven't looked back. I do not know why the Lord blessed me to be surrounded by such wonderful people but I thank him every single day for it.
Day 2 - Something I know a lot about/something I'm good at
--Organization and cleaning. You can ask anyone who has ever lived with me. I am borderline OCD with those concepts.
--Lesson Planning. Considering I'm about to graduate college and enter the job market, I better have a good grasp on this. I can differentiate instruction like nobody's business.
--Sarcasm. Enough said.
Day 3 - Things that make me uncomfortable
Political discussions (no thank you!), people who are lazy (a waste of talent), and having to use my fingernails to scrape something off (gives me goosebumps).
Day 4 - Favorite quote
I have probably posted this somewhere on here before, but it deserves another mention. This quote is by the one and only Dolly Parton. It is a reminder to me that the obstacles and challenges we face are God's way of making us stronger and more faithful servants.
Day 5 - Favorite blogs
Holy cow, where do I even begin?! I love all these blogs for many different reasons -- same stage of life, similar lives, positive outlooks, great DIY projects, whatever. Make sure you follow these ladies :)
Katelyn - A Sweet Southern Mess
Molly - A Midwestern Touch
Stephanie - Beautiful Mess

a personal interview {via LIY}
Erin at Living in Yellow had a personal interview with herself at the end of last week. You know, those tough questions we mentally have in our head at times. She's one of my blogging faves and I thought it would be fun to do the same today.
1. If you could do one thing differently in your life, what would it be?
I firmly believe that every moment of my life was on purpose and for a reason. It has led me to where I am today and today, I am very happy.
However, I do wish that I would've learned how to stand up for myself a long time ago. I am a people pleaser by definition. I like to make everyone happy and, unfortunately, that task is impossible. As I have gotten older, I've realized that it's perfectly fine to say "no" in a situation. That's one of the best things that we, as women, can learn to do.
2. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Let's see...
Professionally -- Master's degree completed, on track to tenure in a public school, (possibly) beginning to look for a job at a local university, and being involved with developing Math curriculum/strategies for elementary students.
Personally -- a couple vacations completed with Hubs and friends, more land purchased, begin breaking ground to build our home, and maybe a kid thrown in the mix ;)
3. Do you honestly want kids?
I think the above questions answered that, but yes. We absolutely want kids... but we absolutely do not want them anytime soon. I know that God has a plan for us and if he chooses to bless us anytime soon with a child, we would be thankful. However, we are taking every precaution to put off that stage of life for several years. We each have individual goals that we want to accomplish before bringing a mini into this world. And we both pray each night for God to send more patience our way for when that time comes!
4. What has been the best moment of your life so far?
I feel lucky because I have great moments every single week... that's a perk of teaching. I am also extremely proud of putting myself through college and that I will be graduating Summa Cum Laude in a matter of days.
My wedding day is currently at the top though... there is no feeling like it.
5. What is your life theme song?
I kid, y'all.
6. What is one thing you have yet to accomplish that you want to do before you die?
I have two... one is to learn how to truly just "be" in the moment and two is to learn how to truly turn everything over to God.
That I was a fair, honest, and kind person to everyone I came in contact with.
8. If you could do anything you wanted right in this very moment (no consequences, no fear, etc), what would it be?
Start my own paperie company. I've been making invitations/programs on the side as a hobby for fellow friends who are getting married. It's something I really enjoy but I'm not ready to take the plunge into doing it as a business. Quite honestly, I'm afraid I would stop enjoying it if I did choose to advertise it.
9. What has been the most challenging moment in your life?
For me, especially within the past few months, it has been adjusting to all the change life has brought me. I am not afraid of change... I know change brings me to better things. What I do not like about change is adjusting to the new routines. I live by routines and when my routine is thrown off, it takes me a long time to embrace it. I am just now beginning to finally adjust to the routine of teaching as opposed to being a college student... it only took me 5 months ;)
10. Summarize yourself in one word.
Growing.

7. If you could choose one thing to be known for, what would it be?
Growing.

balance, perfection, screw it.
Today, I'm linking up with Becky at From Mrs. to Mama. She is hosting an amazing link-up today where we, as women, can just write. And I just have to say that it couldn't have come at a better time.
The past 5 months of my life have been full of nothing but change. I moved out of the only home I'd known for the past 21 years, married my best friend, got semi-adjusted to life as a newlywed, then got thrown into the world of teaching at the beginning of the year when I began student teaching.
Don't get me wrong. These are all amazing things. But they are changes, nonetheless. And as a creature of habit, it has been terribly hard to struggle to find balance over the past few months.
Let's rewind a bit to the fall. We returned from our honeymoon and, to my delight, things just seemed to work themselves out. We both adjusted well to being newlyweds and I felt like I had it under control. Then the new year came and my college girl schedule quickly changed into the real world of teaching. And, boy, was that ever an eye-opener?!
You see I will openly admit that my biggest strength and downfall are that I am a perfectionist. And the sad thing is that I am the only one who brings these expectations on myself.
My husband does not expect things to be perfect. My family does not expect things to be perfect. My friends don't expect things to be perfect.
So why do I?
We all have that picture in our heads. House always spotless, meals always home-cooked, society stresses our weight/appearance, etc. It is a never-ending vicious cycle.
Well, apparently my body finally decided last week that it had enough of the cycle. On Thursday, after feeling totally unlike myself for a few days, I finally visited the doctor and tested positive for Mono.
My body had literally had enough. And so had I. I was exhausted.
I have since spent my days on bed rest and have been doing a whole lot of thinking. I am done with putting those expectations on myself. They are weighing me down and only causing me to miss what really matters in life.
I wasn't really sure where this post would be going when I started writing, I just had to write. And I hope one of you ladies out there will choose to go with me and screw perfectionism. Because the imperfect things are what we remember.
Here's to enjoying life as it comes... not as we picture it should be.

2013. new year; new changes.
I finally fixed the whole Blogger won't upload my pictures thing. I don't know what I did, but I'll take it! This was scheduled for a few weeks ago - my new year goals!
Today, I am doing the obligatory 2013 goals/changes/resolutions post. I usually tend to call them goals rather than resolutions, just a thing of mine. I broke my goals into several different categories and made goals under each of those categories.
Faith
--Start each morning with a devotional and scripture from She Reads Truth.
--Read one additional chapter from the Bible each night.
Family/Friends
--Send one hand-written card to Nate each month.
--Send one hand-written card to another family member or friend each month (not including birthdays).
--Check social media a maximum of three times per day. It's time to unplug from the world!
Health
--Compose meals of fruits, veggies, protein, and healthy carb. For me this means to significantly decrease my sugar intake.
--Cardio at least 4 times a week; arms/legs/abs toning at least 3 times a week.
(If I'm satisfied with my results in the next few weeks, I'll try to post a sample menu and workout.)
Susie Homemaker
--Make dinner at least 4 times a week and continue to make meal plans in advance.
--Tackle an organization/special cleaning project in each room on Saturdays.
What are your goals for 2013? Any suggestions on how to keep mine?
I hope the new year has treated you all well so far! :)

the case of the pinkeye
If I could describe this week in one word, it would be insane. Nathan and I spent all last weekend doing wedding prep, moving, and squeezing in as much homework as I could - not much room for down time. I had been fighting a good head cold for about a week. Mix that with interaction with Kindergarteners and I was a ticking time bomb. I had heard horror stories from past brides and was just waiting for sickness to set in... this week it finally did. Insert the case of the pinkeye.
I woke up Tuesday morning with a red eye but didn't think much of it. I did my normal morning workout then headed straight to work. I couldn't help but notice that my eye was becoming sore and gritty feeling. I went to the bathroom and noticed the gunk oozing out of my eye. Big warning sign. I headed to the doctor ASAP and knew in my gut that I had pinkeye. My gut was right.
Here I am on Tuesday night... swollen, pink, but not too bad.
Then I wake up on Wednesday and all hell broke loose while I was sleeping. Yup, people, that's real.
I stayed home from school for the first time ever in my college career on Wednesday. I really didn't want to but considering I couldn't even take a shower without getting dizzy and nauseous, I knew it was the best thing to do. Going to school would have meant either spreading it to everyone else or getting something worse for myself. I went to the optometrist that morning and got some stronger eye drops. They also told me that the dizziness/nausea was caused from a fluid imbalance in my eyes -- who knew?!
The eye drops were a god send. This is what my eye looked like last night and it looks even better today. All I can say is that although pinkeye is not the worst illness... it may very well be the most annoying. I will be washing my hands religiously now.
With all that said, a couple days of being on house arrest may have been the best thing for me. I got ahead on homework and caught up on some much needed rest. I am hopeful that this has helped me get through the homestretch until the wedding gets here. Now let's just pray that Nathan doesn't go even more dramatic than me ;)
Now for some pictures other than my eye. The recent cold weather has certainly got me and my mums happy...
I absolutely adore this time of year.
As for wedding prep, I had my last bridal shower yesterday and my bachelorette party is tomorrow. I am becoming more and more excited and I cannot wait to share pictures from both events next week :)
Have a great weekend, y'all!

peace
Today, I am thankful. For the first time in quite a while, I am so at peace with life. Is everything the way I want it to be? Absolutely not. But in the past week, I have truly just learned to let go. It's not worth my stress. I was feeling pretty crappy last Monday. Ready to be married, bitter that Nathan and I can't see each other every day, peeved that summer has gone by so quickly, and, quite frankly, a little mad that God seems to just be turning his head when I call for him. Of course, I know that's not the case... I'm just impatient ;)
I feel like for the most part, God has answered the prayers in my life fairly quickly. For the first time, I'm truly having to learn how to be patient and trust him. I figured out, though, that I can't just sit on my hands and wait for things to happen. So, last Tuesday, I got up early and hit the gym. It's a perfect start to my morning. I immediately feel proud of myself and, since I now get home earlier, I am able to spend more time with my family. What's not to love about that?! I've also began a bible study online via She Reads Truth.
Joining in on this is one of the best decision I've made in a long time. I strongly encourage each of you to visit their website and see how it works. I've never been so excited and eager to dive into my bible each day. Another positive influence has been this book by Candance Cameron Bure...
You probably recognize her as DJ Tanner from "Full House" ;)
By burying my head in each of these, I can see a deeper relationship with God forming and I'm convinced that is the reason why I'm experiencing such a peace. Plus, I have seen proof that God is near me via these two fabulous quotes:
"A seed of worry can build mountains but a seed of faith can move mountains." via She Reads Truth.
"And therefore when He sends not the things we ask, He hears us by sending greater things than we could think or ask." A quote from Richard Cecil enclosed in Cameron's book.
Oh yes, I needed both of those.
So now instead of eagerly counting down days and stressing over to-do lists for the wedding day, I'm enjoying this time in my life. I'm only engaged once, right?!
Instead of being bitter that I only see my fiance 3 days a week, I'm thankful that he has a job and for all the things that job has given us.
Instead of being peeved that school is inching closer, I'm remembering all the wonderful memories I've made this summer.
Instead of wondering why God won't make things happen, I'm doing my absolute best at knowing that He has greater things than I can imagine coming.
But, God, if you're reading this... I'd really love if you'd give Nate a new job, make the next 46 days fly by, and make this semester stress-free ;)
Happy Monday, friends!
